Good To Be Back
My name is Jim Black, and I was the club Vice President of the Clinton High (SC) Betas my Senior year in high school, 1984-85, which was the year that Beta celebrated it's 50th anniversary.
I have recently had opportunities to wear my 50th anniversary pin with renewed pride, as I am now the husband of a long-standing Clinton High Sponsor - and current SC State Senior Sponsor, Lynn Black. Since Lynn has been involved with the Beta Club I have had the pleasure of meeting Sponsors and members from clubs in several different states. I have also chaperoned many state conventions and have assisted the sound engineer at conventions in SC, GA, FL and AL.
To be honest I don't remember our club being too active (other than attending convention) when I was involved back in the '80s. but the club we have now is incredible. Hundreds of volunteer service hours are being completed, the club does an annual dinner/ talent show each year with a lot of local support. We have had state competition winners and runners up for the past ten + years, with a lot of them going on to do very well at Nationals. And we have had four State Senior Sponsors from our little school in Clinton.
The thing that continues to impress me is the caliber of talent and leadership I see displayed by Betas from all of the member states. This is truly one of the best character/leader building organizations I have had the pleasure of being a part of, and I strongly encourage other Beta Alumni to continue to support your clubs by holding fund raisers, coaching in competition areas, and just getting the word out to the communities that this is an organization that builds strong character and leadership that these young men and women can use to give back to their towns.
